My Grandfather
He was only 19

~ Beneath a Brave Mask ~
Life is a preset plan At times I really don't understand I look at the faded shades of grey Of this reflection from yesterday
I see the strength in his eyes Hiding the pain of silent tears That covers his inner most fears For no longer was there any cheer
The ghosts of his past He held so deep within his heart The shadows of this time He wanted to leave far behind
Walking through the valleys In the shadows of war Asking a question of our Lord Why did my mates have to die
Standing alone with broken limb Knowing he never committed a sin He stood for what was right That is why he went to fight
The blooded battlefields left there scar The pain from echoes from afar He wanted to leave in yesterdays past Moving forth on a journeys new path
The memories are there deep in his eyes This is something he holds deep inside So many why's and questions he asked Behind the mask of his hurting smile
That place in time he new would be Always within his haunting dreams A calm silence he would control These yesterdays stories he never told.

Remember what they gave
So we can live today
The dark memories they carried into tomorrow
From their yesterdays on the battlefields
Their scars stayed with them for their life time
The shadows never brightened
